Before we married I asked Deb, " What do you want to do?". Deb replied, " Homestead...". Well, I always thought about that too.
Our definition of Homestead isn't exactly a traditional one.
Suburban Homesteading maybe is better description of what we're up to.
We're dreamers enough to think that we can honestly make a real living from growing stuff. We're close...
We both grew up in families that practiced agriculture and entrepreneurship.
We both worked in entrepreneurial jobs prior to farming and have extensive business backgrounds.
Deb's Dad grew up Real Farming and still has Herfords under his care.
I grew up with a Real Dairy Farming Mom (who went to college, plus more) and a Dad that was involved in multiple large scale agricultural enterprises. Mainly turkeys and pigs.
Growing vegetables, preserving, working, weeding and ag. talk and practical training dominated both of our childhoods. Hard Work...
After we married, we quickly found ourselves owning a large Maryland Eastern Shore farm.
Corn, soy beans, peaches, and chickens dominated the view.
The smell of Roundup, incessant work, shipping, no markets and low margins for product coupled with some dramatic changes in our other business lives focused us.
We sold the farm and went, "small and organic". Homestead...
5 years plus after leaving that Eastern Shore farm we find ourselves with a solid 10 acres in vegetable production. JACK'S FARM is USDA Certified Organic.
We have help too. Couldn't do it without.
Our Interns and Farm Helpers learn and work hard to provide you with the product you need, when you need it..
And of course without you we couldn't do it.
It boils down to this:
We believe that a SMALL, QUALITY, EARTH oriented agricultural business focused on LOCALS will always be win-win.
